Climate Change and the Real Estate Sector. Why it’s high time to take the initiative.

The commercial and institutional sector is responsible for 5.0% of greenhouse gas emissions in Quebec and for 4.2% in Canada. That might not seem like much, especially when compared to the transportation sector and to oil and gas production and consumption. But climate change is already responsible for a number of one-time events and for prevailing trends that are affecting the building sector. Now is the time to adapt so that we are able to respond to the needs of clients and protect the value of the built environment. Similarly, decarbonizing buildings, which relies on technologies that are largely in place, will be much easier and less costly than for the transportation sector, while offering many more spinoffs at the local level. What is stopping us from acting right now? What are the impediments – real and imaginary – that are blocking that transformation? What avenues could be pursued to facilitate the transformation of the real estate sector? As we shall see, the answers to these questions are not always what we expect.

Our guest speaker: Normand Mousseau, professor of physics, the Research Chair in complex materials, energy at natural resources at the Université de Montréal and director of the Institut Trottier de l'énergie at the Polytechnique Montréal.
